Every other month in 2023, SBC is planning an activity that brings teens, 14 and up, and adults with spina bifida together to have fun while learning from each other. Beginning in February, our first venture is bowling! We will meet at the Pin Deck at 9:45 AM Saturday morning, February 11th. We are not reserving lanes in advance due to the increased cost, so please try to arrive before they open at 10:00 AM so that we have enough lanes for everyone.
The Pin Deck has 2 adult and 2 child bowling ramps to position and launch the bowling ball for those who prefer to use them. If more than 8 people sign up who require the adult ball ramps, we may need to run a second game beginning at approximately 11:00 AM, and will let you know prior to February 11th so you can plan accordingly. SBC will pay for two hours of play time for attendees with spina bifida (we expect approximately one and a half hours for a game with a little padding for practice). Bar food and drinks are available for purchase at the bowling alley and can be brought to your table while you bowl, or while you are waiting to bowl. You may also choose to wait until you are finished bowling and grab lunch at the bar area afterwards or at a nearby restaurant, including the one at the adjacent Scene 75 which opens at 1PM.
Since many will not use the bowling shoes available at The Pin Deck, we have been asked to wipe down wheelchair tires and remove any grit or pebbles from shoes before bowling. Volunteers/staff will be there with towels to assist.
The intention of this program is to allow teens and adults with spina bifida to interact and form meaningful, peer and mentor relationships. Parents, caregivers, spouses, significant others and friends are welcome to stay after drop off but will be asked to move to another area of the facility to socialize separate from the teens and adults with spina bifida. There are also nearby restaurants (including Dunkin' Donuts for morning coffee) and other activities at Pin Deck, such as foos ball or ping pong for $5/half hour to enjoy time spent waiting.
Have questions or have a friend or family member who likes to bowl that would like to volunteer? Email Diane for additional information.
